Farm Aid Partners With Legends Hospitality to Serve HOMEGROWN Concessions® at Farm Aid 2016 at Jiffy Lube Live Sept. 17
HOMEGROWN Concessions® features good food from family farms at all-day music and food festival
BRISTOW, Va. — Farm Aid announced today that it will partner with Legends Hospitality to bring family farm food to festivalgoers in the DMV (District, Maryland and Virginia) area at Farm Aid 2016 on Saturday, Sept. 17. Legends Hospitality and its culinary team are responsible for the venue’s food and beverage service for the 20,000 concertgoers attending the historic music and food festival at Jiffy Lube Live.
“Farm Aid is pleased to partner with Legends Hospitality to source and serve family farm foods for our concertgoers,” said Farm Aid Associate Director Glenda Yoder. “Since 2007, Farm Aid has brought HOMEGROWN Concessions® to more than 220,000 concertgoers across the nation, expanding economic opportunities for family farmers in food service and introducing music venues to family farm food sources.”
Legends Hospitality’s Southeast Regional Chef Sara Kazmierski is creating specialty menus for Farm Aid 2016 with ingredients adhering to Farm Aid’s HOMEGROWN Concessions® criteria. These criteria require that all ingredients are sustainably produced by family farmers using ecological practices and that farmers receive a fair price for their products. Farm Aid’s Culinary Director Sonya Dagovitz supervises the sourcing of ingredients, utilizing expertise in natural and organic food supply chains and Farm Aid’s strong network of family farms and farmer organizations.
Festivalgoers will enjoy menu items sourced from local farms such as Sullivan’s Pond Farm, Whiffletree Farm and Great Oak Farm. Moo-Thru, the popular Virginia ice cream shop, will provide a sweet treat for festival attendees. Moo-Thru, whose milk and cream comes from owner Ken Smith’s dairy herd, will source fruits from local farms for its Farm Aid 2016 flavors.
Menu items will feature humanely raised meat and dairy, local and organic produce and ingredients, and bread made with organic flour. The HOMEGROWN Concessions® offerings from Legends Hospitality will include chicken tenders from Shenandoah Valley Organic; a soba noodle salad; a grains, greens and beans bowl; potato wedges with toppings; hotdogs; cheese burgers; and mushroom burgers. Two “Farm Fresh” stands will feature Olli Salumeria charcuterie, Bonnyclabber Cheese Co. cheeses, and organic, fair trade chocolates.
“Farm Aid, and the family farmers they support, have inspired our country and our industry since 1985. The hard work of farm families results in quality ingredients that inspire our chefs to be creative and socially conscious in the marketplace,” said Angela Tassie, vice president for Legends Hospitality. “The menus for Farm Aid 2016 HOMEGROWN Concessions® reflect the messages of Farm Aid and offer festival attendees the opportunity to personally experience food with integrity. This culinary approach is the foundation of our hospitality division, and we are proud to feature locally sourced products at all of our venues year-round. We’re grateful to Farm Aid for their continued advocacy, extraordinary work and the positive impact they have had on the hospitality community.”
Additional vendors include longtime Farm Aid food purveyors Patchwork Family Farms and Jalapeno Corndog Concessions, as well as Farm Aid’s own HOMEGROWN Youthmarket, a farm stand staffed by local youth engaged in agriculture. Jirani, a Manassas coffeehouse, will serve coffee and desserts. The Rambler food truck, from Haymarket, Virginia, and The Bone, from Manassas, Virginia, will serve a variety of sandwiches. Virginia peanuts also will be featured.
All food will be served on compostable serviceware to create a least-waste event. This will be the first composting initiative at Jiffy Lube Live. Veteran Compost of Maryland will haul and process serviceware and food scraps to sustain soil and future crops.
Farm Aid 2016 will feature performances by Farm Aid board members Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, Neil Young and Dave Matthews — with Tim Reynolds — as well as Alabama Shakes, Sturgill Simpson, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, Jamey Johnson, Margo Price, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, Insects vs Robots and Ian Mellencamp.
The HOMEGROWN Village will include hands-on activities that engage festivalgoers in the ways family farmers are enriching our soil, protecting our water and growing our economy, in addition to bringing good food for good health.
Tickets to Farm Aid 2016 are available for purchase at Livenation.com, the venue box office, or by phone at 800-745-3000. Individual ticket prices range from $49.50 to $189.50. There are a limited number of four-packs still available for $148.50.
