Farmers and ranchers experience stress and uncertainty for many reasons. From droughts and floods, to wildfires and other natural disasters, producing the good food we all need comes with inherent risks that farmers willingly take on. Despite these risks, they invest their time, labor, money and care because farming is their way of life.
But this year stands out for the number of uncertainties and risks that farmers are having to manage. In January, cuts and funding freezes to crucial programs at the USDA pulled the carpet out from under many farmers. This is the time of year farmers create their business plans and secure funding, and yet income that is due to them through USDA contracts is being withheld. On top of that, staffing cuts and office closures have made it even harder for farmers to get the answers they need.

All of this is causing terrible confusion and turmoil across our food system and it’s up to every one of us to do something about it. Farmers work so hard to bring us good food.
